Tuesday Tips: Food Journaling: FitDay.Com

Tuesday Tips: Food Journaling: FitDay.Com
by Alice Shaffer

As professional nannies we often keep journals on our charges' day for their parents. These journals include such things as food intake, their moods and activities for the day amongst other things. Have you ever kept a journal about you and your daily food intake, mood and activities?

For several months,  I have been on a journey of healthier eating and exercising. I have been working with a personal trainer and a nutritionist in this journey.  The main hurdle in healthier eating is to figure out what exactly you are eating and how much.  I was told I would need to keep a food journal. I was not super happy about this request. I have always had issues with keeping a journal in the past.   The nutritionist recommended a website called FitDay.  This is such an awesome site that I wanted to share it with everyone.

FitDay is a great FREE resource for your food journaling, exercising, measurement tracking and feelings/moods.  These are just the tip of the iceberg in which FitDay can do.

The Pros I have found with FitDay:
  • It is a free program
  • You can enter any food label nutrients and it will calculate your intake-no matter how many servings you have
  • It compares your nutritional intakes with suggested dietary guidelines
  • You can input your measurements and it gives you a visual graph/chart of your progress
  • You can print off your charts to take with you to the doctor etc
  • Journal about your moods and feelings in general
  • Various charts that can be configured to show your fat intakes, calorie averages, weight loss and activity levels, calorie intake planned vs actual etc
The Cons I have found with FitDay:
  • I had to do some initial adding of foods into the database.  This wasn't bad because it took less than 2 minutes per food. This was then in a category called "my customs foods"
  • Some may find the ads distracting and if so you can pay for a premium account for $5.49 a month (this doesn't bother me at all though)

I have found that this is a great for when I have plateaued in my weight loss, had sleepless nights or experience mood changes.  I can go back and look at the past few days, weeks or month to see what was going on.

I encourage you to try out FitDay and track your nutritional, physical and mental activities for the coming month.  Let us know how you are doing.

Financial Friday: Kids & Money

Financial Friday: Kids & Money

by Alice Shaffer

I have been wanting to do a post on teaching kids about money. Some of the things that I want included are how to incorporate savings, spending & charity into the lesson on money. As a professional nanny of teenagers they have a different outlook on money then younger kids do. I was reminded about my desire for doing this post because of meeting up with an old friend for dinner. She has a teenager who will be going overseas later this year for three weeks. The parents told the child that they were providing the plane ticket, hotel/lodging and food money, but the child would have to save and earn the spending the money. This teenager who is in 8th grade has less then $100 saved and will be leaving in about six weeks for Europe. The teenager has been given opportunities to earn money and save it as well. The teenager has chosen to buy this item and that item instead of saving for Europe. The parents have reminded the child with each purchase of the upcoming trip and that there is no additional spending money available to them. So what will this teenager do when they are in Europe and see a wonderful item that they want? Will they think about that awesome CD they bought back in April they just had to have? It is a thing of the past and probably not even thought of anymore. So how do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?

Financial Friday: Wasted Time & Wasted Money Or Is It?

Wasted Time & Wasted Money Or Is It?

by Alice Shaffer

I was looking for a topic for this week's Financial Friday and was talking to a fellow professional nanny about the upcoming INA Conference. We were discussing the costs involved in the INA conference. Yes they can be viewed as expensive to someone who doesn't have a large paycheck. I was sharing with this nanny, that everyone has to determine what their Opportunity Costs are. For me I place a lot of opportunity cost and value in going to nanny conferences.

Tuesday Tips: How To Get Those Electronic Screens Turned Off!

How To Get Those Electronic Screens Turned Off!

by Alice Shaffer

"Turn off the Playstation", "Turn off the TV" and "Turn off the computer!"

These were common phrases at my former nanny job. The boys were 9 and 11 at the time. They got very addicted to “screen time” As a result, their mom came up with an idea of a payment plan for screen time. They were “awarded” 7 hours of screen time a week. Now screen time meant: Wii, XBox, Playstation, gameboy, television, computer -basically anything with a screen. We had devised a payment plan. They had been given 28 little colored cards with 15 mins on it. I will include the link so you can make your own as well.

When they wanted to “cash” in to play some video games they could. This was great in so many ways. We weren’t nagging them to get off the computer. They knew how long they could play etc. We had egg timers for each child so they could set it for 30,45 or 60 minutes etc. When the bell rang it was done. It worked 95% of the time. They also learned time management. If they choose to play for 2 hours on Monday and Tuesday and then were done with all their electronic time by Saturday, they lost out. Each Sunday the bucket was refilled. If they didn’t use up all their time, they could stock pile it as well from week to week. This worked out some weeks for the oldest.

The downside to the electronic time bank was that you could lose your time as well. If you back talked you lost a 15 min card. If you hit your brother you lost time etc. One day the oldest and I got into a bickering match over something. He had stock piled like 32 hours of electronic time. He ended up losing 26 hours in a matter of 1 and half hours of yelling and arguing with me. It was a very painful day for all involved. He will still tell you today how I took away 26 hours of electronic time for nothing. You all know that I like taking away electronic time from kids, right? sigh.

This method was awesome and I have passed it along to lots of other nanny families and friends of mine. I am sharing it with others because I know the endless battle of television/video games/gameboys haunts the majority of all households. Even those with husbands and boyfriends who love the "screens" of the electronics.

How to make your "Electronic Time" system:

Collect some butter containers, cut a little slot in the top of them for each kid. This is their bank. They deposit their time in the container. Have each child pick out a colored sheet of printer paper, and print out atleast 2 copies of the electronic time chart and have the kids cut the squares out. Take them to the store and get them to pick out a timer.

The kids also were able to earn some extra electronic time for doing out of the ordinary type house chores. One time the oldest got 5 hours of electronic time, for cleaning the bathroom tile floor with a toothbrush in the gritty lines. He loved it. Other times were for shoveling snow on the sidewalk and driveway.

Have fun with it and enjoy a pain free way to get your kids off the computer and tv! Let me know how it works in your house!

Financial Friday: Getting ready to start a budget

by Alice Shaffer
As I have mentioned, being a professional live in nanny has wonderful benefits and sometimes a downfall of falling into debt. I have been working with a budget lately and wanted to help others set one up so they can be as financially responsible.
Over the coming weeks, I am going to share with you how to set up a budget along with weekly homework assignments that help you get to the next step in making a budget.
This week we will gather money totals for everything - money coming in and money going out. I suggest getting a one subject notebook for your budget and keeping things together. We will eventually put the budget on a spreadsheet so that it will do the calculating for you.

Financial Friday: What is your opportunity cost?

Over at the Financial Nanny, Alice blogs about opportunity costs and giveaways.

A few months ago, several nannies who are members of the INA sponsored an essay contest. The topic of the essay was “Why you are committed to being a professional nanny?” Now you may ask what does this have to do with finances. A lot of this essay contest has to do with finances. I saved $276 by writing a 300 word essay on why I am I committed to being a professional nanny. I saved that money by making the decision and taking the time during one day to write this essay. It took about an hour to write. So one hour of my time was worth $276. This is what my opportunity cost was
